Use a caliper for flexible general-purpose checks

A caliper can measure accessible external, internal, depth and step features with one instrument. Its versatility is valuable for order checks, but jaw alignment, contact force, wear and feature geometry can influence the reading.

Use a micrometer for suitable external dimensions

A micrometer uses a screw mechanism and defined measuring faces over a limited range. A ratchet or friction device can help make contact force more consistent, but alignment, cleanliness, temperature and part flexibility still matter.
